Very Fine Ormolu, Porcelain and Marquetry Writing Desk by Henry Dasson

About the Item

Very fine ormolu, porcelain and marquetry writing desk by Henry Dasson French, 1890 Height 74cm, depth 80cm, depth 50cm By Dasson, Henry (French, 1825-1896), a leading ébéniste of the French Belle Époque, this beautiful, delicate, and diminutive writing desk is executed in the Transitional style of the 18th century, updated with Dasson's characteristic flair and stylistic touches. Of small proportions, it is inlaid with Sèvres style porcelain plaques to the front on either side, painted with whimsical patterns of fruit and flowers. The leather writing surface atop sits above three drawers, two of which have push-button openings. The edges, panels, and tapering legs are lined with meticulously cast gilt-bronze mounts, the panels with delicate and intricate marquetry designs. It is stamped to the underside 'Henry Dasson / 1890.' This very fine piece is exemplary of Dasson's tendency to take traditional styles and adapt them for contemporary audiences. A leading cabinetmaker, he had a particular skill for this style of work: the ormolu mounts and porcelain panels demonstrate his creative and playful approach, which continues to have a strong appeal.
