About the Item

A supremely functional and aesthetically sophisticated desk in tropical hardwood by Peter Løvig-Nielsen for Løvig, Dansk, 1973. This piece contains the manufacturer's stamp [Løvig, Dansk] to underside of case, as well as the original importer's/retailer's label [Maurice Villency] to interior of drawer and lastly the year of production date [1973] stamped both to underside of drawer as well as underside of case. The architecture of the piece has strong utilitarian motifs, featuring an robust rectilinear structure, with three low stretchers for enhanced stability, while the would-be fourth front stretcher is left uninstalled for unencumbered access to the whatever one may be working on. This arrangement is common on workbenches and assembly tables but here has been expressed in a fine furniture, a truly luxurious application. In all Scandinavian furniture, even the most decorative or romantic, there is always a strong practicality of spirit that permeates the design's appearance as well as construction--and the two are often intimately intertwined resulting in a piece with visual and structural integrity. The main mechanical feature of the desk are the three custom brass decorative hinges which allow the entire upper gallery to 'flip' open. This increases the working surface of the table by around four square feet, it also provides the additional work surface and overhang for alternate-side-seating to turn this into a partner's desk--with two individuals working simultaneously. In the main case we have two large central drawers flanked by smaller side drawers, all with matching solid wood sculpted decorative pulls. In the upper gallery section we see four dividers splitting a larger open compartment perfect for letter and papers as well as two lovely loose trays with decorative bowed fronts and exposed finger joinery. Great catalogued and signed piece, very good condition, functionality and beauty to spare.
