About the Item

A very rare opportunity to own an antique English Regency dining room table in the manner of Gillows, circa 1820 in date, with eight antique Regency dining chairs, also circa 1820 in date This amazing table has two original leaves, can sit eight people in comfort and has been handcrafted from solid flame mahogany which has a beautiful grain. The two leaves can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion by a special winding mechanism and can be easily removed and stored away when not required. The table has four beautiful reeded tapering legs which have been masterfully hand-carved and they terminate in brass castors which makes it easy to move when required. The set of eight antique Regency chairs compliment the table perfectly and comprises six side chairs and a pair of armchairs. These chairs have been masterfully crafted in beautiful rosewood. They have carved back rails, drop-in seats with elegant hand-dyed tan leather upholstery and stand on stylish turned and reeded legs. Whatever the function of this gorgeous set, it will make a profound impression on your dinner guests and will receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed. Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works. Rosewood is a rich warm reddish brown wood that has a distinct grain with dark brown and black outlining. One variety of rosewood can vary significantly from another even though it is of the same species. These rosewoods, native of India, South East Asia and Brazil, were dense and awkward to work with. It was renowned for quickly bluntening cutting tools and visibly darkening in colour when over prepared. The Brazilian species of rosewood was by far the most beautifully figured and therefore it became the most sought after and rare. This was the wood of choice for the great box makers, David and Thomas Edwards who used it to veneer some of their finest pieces. George Bullock (1777-1818) was a sculptor and furniture-maker from Liverpool. George Bullock was born in Birmingham, where his mother ran an exhibition of wax models in the late 1790s. His brother, William Bullock, opened a museum of curiosities in the city in 1800. He moved it to Liverpool the next year and George went with him. By 1804, George Bullock had left his brother's museum and gone into business with a looking-glass maker called William Stoakes. They advertised themselves as "Cabinet Makers, General Furnishers and Marble Workers", trading from a showroom called the "Grecian Rooms" in Bold Street, Liverpool, circa 1806, Bullock dissolved his partnership with Stoakes and took over the Mona marble quarries at Llanvechell on the island of Anglesey for a lease of £1000. The marble was shipped to Liverpool, where it was used for chimneypieces and other decorations. He used it widely in his furnishing schemes, such as the refurbishment of Thomas Johnes’ house at Hafod. He also supplied marble to other sculptors. At about this time, a guide to Liverpool described his Grecian Rooms as offering "an extensive assortment of elegant and fashionable furniture as also, statues, figures, tripods, candelabra, antique lamps, sphinxes, griffins, in marble, bronze and artificial stone." Bullock also stocked "a good collection of ancient and modern busts, among the latter, those of many of the most distinguished characters in Liverpool and its neighbourhood, modelled by himself. Following the success of his company he moved to London in 1813, becoming director of the company. These marbles were used in the monuments to the Rev Glover Moore in St Cuthbert's in Halsall, Lancashire, and to Anna Maria Bold in St Luke's in Farnworth, Lancashire. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Liverpool Academy between 1804-1816. He was the President of the Liverpool Academy in 1810-1811. He also undertook commissions for his furniture designs, notably for Sir Walter Scott and for the government, to provide furnishings for Napoleon's exile on St. Helena. Our reference: 06625a
