Antique Victorian Mahogany Dining Table and Eight Chairs

About the Item

This is a beautiful antique dining set comprising an antique Victorian mahogany dining table, circa 1860 in date, and a set of eight antique English Hepplewhite dining chairs. This amazing table has two original leaves and can sit ten people in comfort. This striking table has been hand-crafted from solid flame mahogany which has a beautiful grain and is in really excellent condition. The two leaves can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion by a special winding mechanism and can be easily removed and stored away when not required. The table is raised on four beautiful cabriole legs which have been masterfully hand carved and terminate in their original brass and porcelain castors, which makes it easy to move when required. The fantastic antique English set of eight mahogany and boxwood inlaid Hepplewhite style dining chairs are circa 1900 in date. Comprising six singles and two carvers, with pierced back supports centred by inlaid shell patera, with red leatherette drop-in seats above serpentine shaped seat rails, raised on square tapering legs with elegant spade feet. These chairs have been masterfully crafted in beautiful solid mahogany throughout and the finish and attention to detail on display are truly breathtaking. Whatever the function of this gorgeous set, it will make a profound impression on your dinner guests and will receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 6 inches x width 7 feet, 8 inches x depth 4 feet, 0 inches - when fully extended. Height 2 feet, 6 inches x width 4 feet, 7 inches x depth 4 feet, 0 inches - when closed. Height 3 feet, 2 inches x width 1 foot, 9 inches x depth 1 foot, 10 inches - chairs. Height 3 feet, 2 inches x width 2 feet x depth 2 feet - armchairs. Flame mahogany: Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works. George Hepplewhite: (1727 - 1786) was a cabinetmaker. He is regarded as having been one of the "big three" English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale. There are no pieces of furniture made by Hepplewhite or his firm known to exist but he gave his name to a distinctive style of light, elegant furniture that was fashionable between about 1775 and 1800 and reproductions of his designs continued through the following centuries. After he died in 1786, the business was continued by his widow, Alice. In 1788 she published a book with about 300 of his designs, The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide, with two further editions published in 1789 and 1790. Hepplewhite produced designs that were slender, more curvilinear in shape and well balanced. There are some characteristics that hint at a Hepplewhite design, such as shorter more curved chair arms, straight legs, shield-shape chair backs, all without carving. The design would receive ornamentation from paint and inlays used on the piece.
