Classic 7-Player Viking Oak Poker Table Set by Romweber in Green Vinyl

About the Item

This outstanding viking oak poker table set by Romweber must have been a cherished possession. It’s truly astonishing to find a poker set in such amazing condition after nearly five decades. The Viking oak set is seven sided with seven chairs for each player. Solid oak chip holders are placed at each setting. These chip caddies can be lifted out of their recessed well. You can even flip the block over to create a completely smooth table top surface. The barrel back chairs are hefty and feature their original sage colored vinyl. Romweber stopped making the Viking Oak poker table set in the 1980's because the high quality construction proved too costly by modern production standards. It’s easy to see how these chairs are expensive to produce. They are embellished with finery throughout including brass nail heads on the upholstery, relief cut solid oak plank backrests and ornately sculpted legs. Butterfly joints act as functional decorative elements on the table top surface. This is the type of American craftsmanship we all dream of returning to. About Romweber: Our unique history dates back to the late 19th century and the three companies from which we evolved: the American Furniture Company, Batesville Cabinet Company, and Batesville Coffin Company. Each company started in 1879, making us one of the nation’s oldest case good furniture manufacturers. American Furniture Company manufactured bedroom furniture while Batesville Cabinet specialized in dining room furniture. Of course, Batesville Coffin is self-explanatory. When these companies merged, they shared a sales force. The salesmen traveled the nation, calling upon owners of furniture stores and directors of funeral homes – often one in the same. Products were sold and shipped coast to coast, quite a rarity at the time. The Depression was a challenge to most business, and ours was no exception. Our survival hinged on our ability to adapt and make products that were in demand during these lean economic times. In fact, RomWeber made five-pound fruitcake boxes to survive those tough years. Our versatility came to the fore again during World War II when we made ammunition boxes and pontoons for American troops, and furniture for officers’ quarters. Romweber furniture went to college with the baby boomers. Schools like Purdue, Indiana University, Xavier University, Miami University of Ohio, and Notre Dame bought it for dorms and classrooms because of its durability. Forty years later, it still is in some of these schools. No Romweber collection, however, was more popular than our Viking Oak Collection. Word has it that in the early 1930’s, R. J. Romweber, grandson of our founder, took a trip to Norway and was inspired to create a line of furniture, based on Nordic design. The result was the Viking Oak Collection, which thrived from 1935 – 1987, making it the longest continuing, commercial furniture collection. The Viking Oak Poker Table was one of the most popular from the line. Renowned people and places have been among Romweber customers. U.S. presidents and Saudi royalty have purchased our furniture. So have fine resorts, including the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, and The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. In addition, we have helped furnish the Carter Library at Emory University, as well as governors’ mansions and distinguished homes nationwide. Some vintage Romweber Furniture Company designs may strike the young as passé. But for fans of a certain age, the American brand never went out of style.

The Romweber story began in the late 1800s, with the launch of American Furniture Company, which made bedroom furniture, Batesville Cabinet Company, a dining-room-set manufacturer, and Batesville Coffin Company. The three companies eventually merged to become a large and reputable manufacturer of case goods, furniture and more. Not unlike many American companies, production at Romweber suffered during the Great Depression. The brand managed to stay afloat by making a rather strange pivot — to selling five-pound fruitcake boxes. During the Second World War, Romweber pivoted again, this time to the production of ammunition boxes and pontoons for American troops and, naturally, furniture for officers’ quarters.

While Romweber furniture (spelled “RomWeber” in vintage advertisements), dating back to the early 20th century, had designers working in the French Rococo and Chippendale styles, the brand is best known for its mid-century modern pieces. In the postwar years, Romweber manufactured walnut case pieces and storage cabinets that featured decorative olive-ash and burl-wood inlays with brass hardware as well as solid oak credenzas and dining tables designed by the likes of Harold Schwartz. For collectors of sophisticated 1950s furniture, the company’s sturdy Viking Oak line is particularly popular.

“It’s not uncommon for customers to say, ‘My parents had this Romweber Viking set,’” says Adam Cramer of collectors who visit Liberty & 33rd, the gallery he owns with his wife in South Bend, Indiana, about three hours north of Romweber’s birthplace in small-town Batesville. “It’s solid oak,” Cramer tells 1stDibs of the line of tables, chairs, desks and more.

Solid oak is the product of slow-growing deciduous trees. Solid oak furniture is durable, desirable and an investment that is usually associated with a hefty price. In solid oak furnishings, such as those that make up the covetable Romweber Viking Oak line, which launched in 1935, there aren’t any scraps of other components in the construction. Inspired by Scandinavian folk design, Romweber’s Viking Oak is said to have enjoyed one of the longest runs for a commercial furniture line in history. The collection went out of production in the late 1980s, and mid-century editions remain highly prized for their exceptional quality and hand-carved details.
