About the Item

This is a beautiful Regency style dining table complete with the matching set of sixteen chairs, dating from the last quarter of the 20th century. The table is made of flame mahogany with superb satinwood crossbanded decoration. It will seat sixteen people in comfort and eighteen to twenty if required. There is no mistaking the fine craftsmanship of this handsome table which is certain to become a treasured addition to your furniture collection and a talking point with guests at meal times. The table has two leaves which can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion and it stands on three "gun barrel" triple leg bases which terminate in "Lion's Paw" brass toes with recessed castors. The set of matching chairs comprises two armchairs and fourteen side chairs and they have drop in seats which are upholstered in an elegant royal burgundy and gold fabric. Unusually the drop in seat cushions can be removed when required, to reveal cane seats, which allow for cooler and more comfortable dining in the warmer summer months. The chairs are made from solid mahogany and feature satinwood inlaid and crossbanded decoration to compliment the table. They have been lovingly French polished and are ready to grace your dining or conference room. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation of condition. Height 2 feet, 6 inches x width 11 feet, 3 inches x depth 3 feet, 10 inches - with both leaves removed. Height 3 feet, 1 inch x width 1 foot, 10 inches x depth 1 foot, 9 inches - armchair. Height 3 feet, 1 inch x width 1 foot, 7 inches x depth 2 inches - side chair. Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Our reference: 03131a.
