1930s Modernist Extendable Dining Table

About the Item

An original Modernist dining table from the 1930s. This table has a dignified design with stylish proportions together and a dazzling Walnut pattern to the table top and also the legs. This piece was sourced in Brno, Czech Republic. It is believed that this table was made exclusively as a high end bespoke project. The exceptional quality of the materials and extremely precise craftsmanship which is evident in the construction - and in every detail. The table was most likely an order for the interior of villa owned by the German or Czech upper classes living in Brno before the WWII. The designer / producer of the table is unfortunately unknown to us. However the quality of the materials, the perfect attention to every detail indicates that it is likely to be a bespoke project of the local manufacturers and one of the leading furniture producers in Europe at the time - UP Brno Factory - where the iconic architects Jan Vanek and later Jindrich Halabala worked as designers and Art directors. At first sight, this table looks similar to other extendable tables from the era. But its design is slightly different; the table top part is not as deep as the standard production making the whole piece look visually lighter. When extending the table, the table top can slide with ease horizontally, and two middle bits (in the same high wood quality as the rest of the table!) can be simply flipped and placed in the middle. This table is in great vintage condition with only minimal wear gained over the years. It operates as an extendable table, with a full length of 180 cm. Recent restoration has fully revived the extremely rich colour of the entire piece, showing off the beautiful patterns on all surfaces. The entire piece has been hand finished by Shellac and Nitro varnishes in order to achieve original gloss finish. This piece is truly marvellous example of the sophisticated furniture design of the early 20th Century.
