Amnis Dining Table by Deceres Studio Aluminum Obsidian Marble 2022 La Jolla, California Inspired by the nearby Salk Institute by Louis Kahn, the Amnis Table specifically references the architecture of the plaza at the center of the complex, for which Louis Kahn invited Mexican architect Luis Barragan to collaborate on its design. Kahn originally intended on planting a garden in the center, but it was Barragan that suggested not a single leaf, plant or flower should be added, stating: “If you make this a plaza, you will gain a facade - a facade to the sky” As a result of this collaboration, the Salk Institute boasts a single water feature that leads directly to the cliffs, overlooking the Pacific. The Amnis Table’s textured aluminum pedestals hold Obsidian plates that, much like the water feature at the Salk Institute, guide the eye toward the same Pacific Ocean views.
