The gorgeous rosewood and walnut seen on this antique English tilt-top table, circa 1835 is positively stunning. Constructed during the William IV period in England the circular top is ablaze with figured rosewood along with a wide border of walnut featuring a string linear grain pattern. As rosewood was not a native timber to England but an import from the Equatorial regions under British rule its use in a piece of furniture was always a luxurious and costly choice. The table top edge has a clean line while the recessed apron features a pie crust edge pattern similar to those seen on Georgian period tilt top tables. The gentle undulation of the antique table's apron edge relates beautifully to the baluster form of the central pedestal column with its shaped profile. Please notice that the pedestal is actually octagonal as it has eight distinct facets extending from the top to the base where it rests upon eight rounded lobes. The natural color of the walnut and the passage of time has given the table a mellow appearance with an exceptional patina. The triangular shaped base has clean cut edges with each point of the triangle raised upon well carved lion paw feet taken directly from George II period furniture. The top of the table is able to be raised upright by releasing the original brass clasp on the underside. This type of antique tilt top table that is actually large enough to be used as an antique dining table or as a centre table in an entry or living room was always made to be beautiful whether it is in an upright position or laid flat and used as a table. This is because often the table would not be used but placed in a corner to display the exotic grain of the timber. Remember that any household that could afford this type of English tilt top table also employed Servants who could move the table anywhere it was needed. The contrast between the bold carving of the feet, the gently rounded lobes and the highly patterned grain were all chosen to harmonize in creating this handsome example of superior English cabinet making skill.
