Black Dining Table by Piet Hein for Fritz Hansen, 1960s

About the Item

Amazing and fashionable table designed by Piet Hein & Bruno Mathsson for the house of Frits Hansen, made in the 1960s in Denmark. The top is made of black lacquered wood, and chromed steel legs. Extremely simple and pure, this table is one of the most emblematic of Danish design thanks precisely to the legs made up of triple beams of chromed steel that come together in a circular base support. Lightness, versatility and originality, also achieved in the voluptuous shape of the top, with rounded corners and whose center is narrower. About Piet Hein (1905 – 1996) Piet Hein was a man of the Renaissance, since he not only cultivated art but also other scientific and philosophical disciplines. He was also a mathematician, writer and poet. This versatility probably arose from a childhood surrounded by politicians, artists, and writers. In 1944 Hein shared his work methodology, defending the idea that art is the solution to problems that cannot be clearly formulated before they are resolved. For a while he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Stockholm), upon returning to Denmark he switched studies to Philosophy and Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen and at the Technical University of Denmark. This broad and varied training is what led him to think that there was no insurmountable difference between the objective world of science and the subjectivity of the field of Fine Arts. In 1972, Yale University awarded him an honorary doctorate. Hein was the creator of the superellipse that he developed in parallel with his poetic work. Using mathematics he managed to come up with a geometric shape (the variation of an oval) that solved an urban planning problem in a 200m long rectangular square in the city of Stockholm, which joined two highways in a huge roundabout. This solution was later applied in other cities in France, Canada, Mexico, the US and Japan in constructions as varied as an Olympic stadium, residential areas or sports centers. In addition, he also applied this solution in designs such as table tops. As a designer he created vases, vases, lamps, chandeliers, tables, stools, kitchen utensils, coolers, bottle openers and textiles among many other designs. Piet Hein is one of the Danes who has received the most awards, some of them being the Industrial Design award in 1971 or the annual award of the Design Council of Denmark in 1989. About Fritz Hansen Fritz Hansen is a famous modern furniture design company that works with the most prestigious designers in the world. Fritz Hansen's collections stand out for being icons of Scandinavian design such as the Egg armchair or the chair designs by Arne Jacobsen. The origin of the brand dates back to the end of the 19th century.
