About the Item

Inspired by an 18th century Swedish-Gustavian table that is in our inventory, this very handsome and solidly-built dining table was fabricated in our workshop. Table may be purchased with a maple, walnut or cherry top. The top, as shown in main image, is made of solid American maple planks that are 1 1/4" thick and are finished with a LEED certified, organic finishing oil in a light honey-color. We are also showing the top in American black walnut. Tops can be interchanged with the base so please indicate the top you prefer. The base has a distressed painted finish in a Gustavian grey/white tone. Table with maple top is ready for immediate delivery! 1stdibs Shipping is only $150 to anywhere in the continental US. Table is made to dismantle into five sections for ease in shipping. Measures: 96" long x 42" wide x 30" high. Note: Table is being shown in our showroom with a set of 6 Karl Johan Swedish chairs and a pair of Karl Johan Arm chairs. An important distinction: We use cross braces with sliding dovetails to connect the table to the trestle bases. This is done by cutting a dovetail socket the width of the underside of the table & then driving the pin and tail cut on the top of the cross brace through the channel. This prevents the table top from checking or cupping by allowing it to expand and contract with temperature & humidity fluctuations. The support bracket is then pegged to the upper trestle bases. Our cabinetry shop employs 19th century joinery techniques and embraces practices that we have learned & come to understand through over 35 years of restoration work on antique furniture from many parts of the world. The wood we use for the tops is sourced from a small family mill in Pennsylvania that only cuts old growth trees that are in distress. Their wood is extraordinary and unlike commercially available lumber; the grain is tight, the planks are wide and the surface patterns can be exceptional. It is comparable to wood used for cabinetry back in the 19th century.
