A French Belle Époque cast iron table with three legs and an oak top circa 1895. This table is an excellent example of late nineteenth century manufacturing in cast iron that France excelled in after the extraordinary example of the Eiffel Tower. With the invention of cast iron the ability to design and build structures of vast scale became possible. Although cast iron was primarily used for commercial purposes it soon became the target of designs intended for residential interiors as well as private and public gardens. This particular table showcases a pattern of winged female figures ideally suited to shape of the three legs. Each leg has a lovely sweep to its profile reminiscent of a Cabriole leg that made its appearance in the early eighteenth century. Set between the three legs is a circular shelf with a perforated surface and secured to the legs by concealed bolts. Actually the entire table is assembled from separate elements that have been bolted together and therein lies the beauty of cast iron. These elements that make this table were all cast separately which meant they could easily be shipped anywhere in the world for assembly on site. Once this particular table was put together the gilded finish was applied and the manner in which the gilding has aged over time adds immeasurably to its current appeal. The top of the table is made of solid oak chosen for its durability and the bold pattern of its grain. When this table was first manufactured it was prized for its beauty, strength and affordability, all qualities that it enjoys today.
