Lawrence Laske for Knoll Vintage Saguaro Cactus Side Table Lawrence Laske (b. 1963, Chicago) “Saguaro Cactus” Table Design for Knoll, 1993 Out of production design offers the rational beauty of midcentury design combined with the playfulness of postmodern invention. In the spirit of Midcentury honesty, materials speak to their native character: extruded aluminum legs are sculpted and polished to allow for glide free legs and an intriguing play of supporting and supported uprights all of which yields an exceeding stable little table. Meanwhile, a sharply bevelled top plays down the bulk of surface material to emphasize the warmer play of birds eye maple surface pattern. Here is a side table to rival the sublime-but now all too common-Saarinen tulip side table. The Saguaro offers a novel version of that indispensable surface near our favorite lounge chair or sofa. The disciplined whimsy here echoes the like-minded success of contemporaneous late 20th century work by Phillip Stark where the logic and restraint of modernism dictates the parameter of play. That nineties play of form and physics is evidenced here with legs that take turns radiating from a floating center fulcrum which carries itself past it’s required trajectory. The heaviest center tube appears to revel in it’s dependence upon surrounding shoots of metal tubing for mid air trajectory past it’s supporting cast in flight pattern downward calling attention to the rounded forms shared by ground support with it’s own scaled up broomstick character. Stark contrast animates this deceptively simple little accent table. Lacquered birdseye-maple top offers active reference to nature’s penchant for decorative wood patterns. Polished aluminum base offers nod to the beauty of industrial invention. The Knoll website shares some of Laske’s biography: Knoll website: "After completing his industrial design work at the University of Illinois, Lawrence Laske pursued post-graduate work in urban scenography design at the prestigious Domus Academy in Milan. It was there where he would meet and, soon after, collaborate with noted Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. Sottsass became a lasting influence on Laske’s work; “Ettore taught me to challenge what is perceived as normal and expected.” In 1989, he formed Laske Design, a product and interior design firm that has since designed for Alessi, Copco, Dansk, Knoll, and Maxray. In 1993, Laske designed the Saguaro and Toothpick Cactus Tables for Knoll. Inspired by nature, this whimsical table collection was based upon simple, organic forms rendered from natural materials."
