Swedish Art Deco Grace Axel Einar Hjorth table with tiles, 1931

About the Item

Rare Art Deco piece, coffee table with beautiful spiral legs made of red beech and black tiles with gold motif. Dimensions for this table with turned legs of red beech is H 56 x W50 x W50cm. Tiles have a gilded pattern with a lion in the middle, designed by Edgar Böckman (1890-1981) and executed by Upsala Ekeby. There is a plate with Nordiska Kompaniet, 1931-06-23, drawing number 35724, ordered by E Åkerlund. Axel Einar Hjorth was a Swedish architect and designer whose application of Art Deco and Modernist aesthetics made his work an early model of contemporary Swedish design, with its emphasis on minimalism and functionality. His works are very sought after today and are even found in the collection of the National Museum in Stockholm. Hjorth died on June 21, 1959 in Stockholm, Sweden.
