Teak Nesting Tables by Johannes Andersen for CFC Silkeborg, 1960s Denmark

About the Item

Set of three Mid-Century Modern nesting tables designed by the Danish architect Johannes Andersen for CFC Silkeborg. Rounded tapered legs in solid teak wood in beautiful X shaped organic design. Very sculptural and elegant appearance. Dimensions: (D x L x H) 40 x 71.5 x 52 cm, 36 x 53 x 49 cm and 34.5 x 47 x 47 cm. While information about designer Johannes Andersen is few and difficult to confirm, it is thought that he was born in 1903 in Aarhus, Denmark, and began his career as a cabinetmaker. He went on to work in a number of workshops for several years until founding his own architectural and furniture workshop in the 1930s. Andersen's designs include chairs, tables, and storage made of fine materials like rosewood and teak. His work followed the growing interest for Danish furniture designs in the midcentury, and he garnered international acclaim, particularly for coffee tables such as the highly sculptural Smile Table. Andersen worked steadily for his own firm, as well as enterprises in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway such as Trensum, CFC Silkeborg, Bramin, and Uldum Mbelfabrik, until he closed his shop in his forties.

Capella chair by Illum Wikkels with new upholstery in gorgeous white fabric, created in 1959 and produced by N. Eilersen in the 1960s. Wikkelso (spelled Wikkels) is a lesser-known Scandinavian designer than Hans J Wegner or Borge Mogensen. Wikkelso, like many other designers of his generation, began his work as a cabinetmaker in 1938. He went on to study at the Danish School of Design, where he graduated in 1941. Following graduation, After graduating he held positions with the cabinetmaker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. A few years later, Wikkelso moved to Aarhus (second largest city in Denmark) where he worked as an interior designer. When Wikkelso began designing his own furniture in 1954, his career really took off. A few years later he started his own workshop. His background in cabinetry meant he had an very good understanding of the material he worked with (mostly rosewood and teak). The Illum Wikkelsø Capella chair...
