About the Item

A game table from the 19th century with humpback stretchers, pillar legs and bamboo motif bundled crossmembers. Created in China during the Qing Dynasty in the 19th century, this sturdy table features a square planked top sitting above an openwork apron. It is raised on four simple cylindrical legs that suggest tree trunks. In fact, "round-posted" furniture of this type traces its origins to the very beginning of Chinese furniture, which was very close to nature. The Chinese favored square tables for dining and often moved furniture from room to room or to an outdoor courtyard if the weather was pleasant. Accordingly, the table is quite portable. The wood has various imperfections that only add to its charm and beauty. The joinery of the piece has been tightened with the addition of small shims and the piece has been given a coating of beeswax. Otherwise it has been left in its original state. It is an ideal addition to a modern room and ready to be used as a dining table, game table or center table.

Chinese Square Dining or "Eight Immortals" Table
Located in Chicago, IL
This sturdy, almost architectural Chinese table is is an excellent example of "scholar's furniture". Scholar's furniture is known for rounded frames that suggest tree trunks and a general lack of unnecessary adornment. The table's floating panel top is held by round corner posts that gracefully transform into square feet as they meet the ground. Arched spandrels connect the legs to the top, suggesting the roof of a building is held up by corner posts. Two drawers are held in the thick waist. The table boasts highly original oxblood lacquer patina, gently rubbed through to the wood over many decades. These tables are sometimes known as "eight immortals...
