An Unusual French Period Directoire Fold Over Demi-lune Console Table

About the Item

This table made in France during the brief period of the Directoire period circa 1790 is of a very unusual form. Crafted from mahogany solids and veneers the D shape opens with a slide out leg concealing a drawer and creating a round leather topped table. The form a simple design is here presented with a semicircle opening when closed but then turns into a circle into the open space created by the drawers extension. This makes the table usable as a center table, a card table , a writing table or a console. The period is hallmarked by a strong sense of clean lines fine but not fancy wood selection and a sobering sensible presence of form. This table to us is especially interesting for a number of reasons the unusual form, it retains its original leather top with gilt tooling, fine craftsmanship and most telling the table has been repaired or restored several times over its life indicating how loved and honored a place it held to someones life. These restorations include a clever patch done when a hinge needed replacing , the leather surface has split were the fold over is and a patch has been used to retain the vast majority of the leather please see photos 4 & 5, as well as a removable wooden piece in the 20th century that has been made to fill in the semicircular hole when closed to create a complete surface making it a more usefully console table. The table exhibits some warping to the legs and shrinkage in the top but is stable, intact, usable and well loved.

Wear consistent with age and use. The table shows warping to the legs and top with some shrinkage to the top as well but has a good finish and is stable, looks good and is usable right away.
