About the Item

Exquisite...the changeable rays of light, playing, as a kaleidoscope on the brilliant varnished colors of the polychrome ornaments... Part of a giant wave of orientalism which flowed over Europe for over a century. These jeweled pieces, decorated a smoking room, a boudoir, a salon, sometimes the only fantasy of the room, sometimes part of a complete theme. Fallen of favor, many of them finished squashed in an attic, their fragile painted structure, slowly vanishing, few of them reached us... This one , is one of them...! Stamped under the table top ''Ameublements- Mercier Freres- Paris- 100 faubg St Antoine''. The marble is engraved and richly inlaid with colors, the carved wooden structure fully decorated and softly varnished. Mercier Frères: First established by Claude Mercier in 1828, the firm became Mercier Frères after his sons took over. Purveyors to the spanish crown, they established a solid notoriety and were present at all the great expositions of the years after 1844. Their work often gratified by medals. This company was active until very recently. DELIVERY INCLUDED IN THE PRICE Effets changeants de la lumière, à la manière d'un kaléidoscope, sur les ornements polychromes de ce guéridon aux couleurs brillantes. On aurait pu l'imaginer chez Alexandre Dumas, dans son château de Monte Christo... Il émane de cette grande vague d'orientalisme qui déferla sur l'Europe pendant plus d'un siècle. ces'' meubles bijoux'' plein de fantaisie, ornait un fumoir, un salon, un boudoir, parfois seul élément insolite, parfois partie d'un ensemble. Tombé en défaveur, bien d'entre eux finirent au fond d'une remise, leur fragile décor offert aux intempéries, bien peu d'entre eux nous sont parvenus... Celui- ci, en est un ravissant exemplaire..! Estampillé sous le plateau supérieur, '' Ameublements - Mercier frères- 100 faubg St Antoine.'' Les plateaux sont en marbre gravés d'un riche décor et peints en coloris, la structure est en bois découpé et complètement rehaussée de couleur. Mercier frères La firme Mercier fondé par Claude Mercier en 1828, devint Mercier Frères en 1867, lorsque ses fils reprirent la succession. Fournisseur de la cour d'Espagne, ils participèrent à partir de 1844 à toutes les expositions aussi bien en France qu'en Angleterre. Leur travail souvent gratifié par des médailles, cette société était encore en activité, à la même adresse , jusqu'à très récemment ...
