Set of 3 Nesting Side Tables with Red Lacquer Tops
About the Item
A set of three Bauhaus-inspired Hungarian Art Deco side tables. These tables are as beautiful as they are practical. The solid walnut frames have been French-polished dark, almost black. Their tops are red lacquer and have been gently re-glossed, saving the old patina. The vivid red-and-black color scheme is often found on Central European (especially Czech and German) pieces from the interwar years. Many bold furniture experiments were undertaken during the 1920s and 30s that reflected the new political and cultural thinking of the era. This was particularly noticeable in Hungary because Hungary underwent enormous changes after the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Unmoored from aristocratic tradition, Hungarian artists embraced modernism while keeping their preference for rich materials and finishes. These tables are perfect for a living room or bedroom.
