Adjustable French Wooden Dumb Waiter/Pedestal Stand from the Late 19th Century

About the Item

Adjustable French wooden dumb waiter/pedestal stand from the late 19th century. This stand from circa 1880 is a French example of a piece of furniture that developed in England in the early 18th century, the dumb waiter. The pieces were early examples of the automation we see today, being described at the time as a useful piece of furniture, to serve in the place of a waiter which assisted in confidential dining as diners could pick up desserts or silverware from the dumb waiter rather than depend on a human waiter. This piece has two octagonal trays, each with a beautiful marquetry decor. Each tray is surrounded by a simple elegant gallery which works to keep placed items from sliding off. This French dumb waiter pedestal is unique in that it raises from its 33.25 inch height to 38 inches. With its beautiful stained wood and captivating marquetry, this piece would make a wonderful addition to a dining room or entrance way in any home.
