A Museum Sample Of Italian Coal
About the Item
The first excavations in the area occurred in 1835 via the Society of Montemassi and Ribolla-Follonica. By 1888 Florentine and foreign businessmen founded the Joint Stock Mining Company of Montecatini, primarily as a means of exploiting the copper mines of the region.
Having taken its’ name from a nearby stream, the Ribolla mine was active for more than a century. During the Second World War, the mining town of Montecatini was of particular interest due to its significant lignite deposits. As a result, Montecatini was controlled by the military throughout the war and due to the labour of Austrian and German prisoners of war, the mine reached peak productivity of approximately 270,000 tonnes per year.
After the war, production decreased and the future of the mine was uncertain following a series of incidents. However, a devastating explosion of firedamp on the 4th May 1954 where 43 miners were killed, resulted in the directors closing the mine, the demobilization of which took five years. The accident was the worst of its kind in the Italian post-war period.
