Monumental Four Metre 19th Century Italian Walnut Refectory Table

About the Item

An Enormous, Truly Monumental Four Metre 19th Century Italian Walnut Refectory Table. This table, measuring four metres in length, is extraordinarily large. It takes some of its form, particularly that of the end supports, from the classical pieces that were adapted by designers such as Charles Tatham for use in modern furniture in all the fashionable homes in Europe. Other parts of the design such as the panelling and decoration to the frieze seem to take their influence from 17th century designs. The great variety of mouldings employed in the construction of this piece as well as the quite exceptional guilloché carving to the sides of each support demonstrate the sheer quality of the work and the massive size means that this piece can only have been produced for an exceedingly wealthy patron. The top is beautifully figured and highly decorative. A very grand piece of furniture that we are privileged to be able to offer to our clients.
