1930's Bauhaus Tubular Flower Stand

About the Item

A modernist flower stand made up of four glass shelves of different sizes, positioned at different heights and with a continuous tubular frame. Designed to display plants and flowers in a beautiful composition. This piece is a prime example of the avant-garde 1930’s tubular furniture production. It’s design is inspired by Emile Guyot work for Thonet and was most likely produced by UP Brno (under the art directorship of Jindrich Halabala in their metal workshop in Kyjov, Czechoslovakia). In the 1920's and 1930's there were many variations of flower stands designed by different architects and produced by various manufacturers. It was a very popular piece of furniture and every modern household wanted one. The form and design concept of this piece is inspired by the tubular furniture developed by Marcel Breuer during the 1920’s. The idea behind Breuer's tubular design was to make furniture that would match the emerging Modernist architecture and the new proposed way of living. Functional with minimal detailing, making the furniture pieces light and almost “invisible”. Overall the flower stand is in good vintage condition. There is some wear and patina on some parts of the steel frame and on the rubber glass holders gained from its use over the years. The original glass was broken and replaced by four new pieces that are the exact replicas.
