The unusual design of this antique English mahogany table, circa 1835 dates it to the William IV period. Please look at the beautiful sweep of the mahogany timber grain that fills the entire top from side to side. The lush movement of the pattern of the grain embodies all the qualities that make mahogany one of the most desirable timbers the world over. The rounded edge sits atop a recessed apron marked by a symmetrical pattern of raised buttons separating simulated folds of mahogany placed to look like drapes of fabric. This unique pattern continues along the entire front and both sides of the table and even continues along the reverse side as the table is fully finished in the round. The clever design conceit of using one material (timber) to mimic another material (fabric) was employed only by skilled cabinet makers whose patrons appreciated the finesse needed to accomplish such a goal. The tabletop stands upon a tapered column of octagonal shape placed exactly in the centre of piece. At the raised base the column sits within a circular raised collar of mahogany whose rippled moulding reflects light onto the column and provides a lovely contrast from the geometric angularity of the column to the smooth supple quality of the collar. The base of the table is in the form of a quatrefoil with four rounded points that extend outward in balanced harmony. Again notice the powerful grain of the mahogany used to sheathe the base and column with large swathes of light and dark shading creating a changing pattern. The quatrefoil base of this antique English side or console table is supported by four bun feet that conceal the original brass casters which enable the table to be easily moved.
