About the Item

Jordan Mozer (b.1958), Creature Side Table / Occasional Table, Hand-Carved Cast Aluminum with Patina, Chicago, USA, 2008. Signed. Measures: 17.5" long x 12.5" wide x 25.5" tall (44.5 cm long x 31.75cm wide x 65 cm tall). PROCESS + MATERIALS Made in Chicago, USA. The sculpture for this piece was carved in wood. It was then cast in recycled magnesium-aluminum alloy. It was then hand polished and rubbed with elixirs to create the patina. This piece is also available in a brushed finish and in red-bronze.. THE STORY This table was inspired by both pre-Columbian Inca gold sculptures and contemporary graffiti from Rio de Janeiro and it shares the artist’s brother’s nickname. The Creature Table was created by Jordan Mozer + Associates, Ltd. for their fourth collaboration with Chef Michael Cordua: Americas Restaurant in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood. Mozer and Chef Cordua have been collaborating on projects since 1992. Mozer and Cordua are inspired by the myriad cultures blended together in the Americas; the narratives of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges and Cormack McCarthy; as well as the anthropology of dining touched on, for instance, by Jared Diamond and Charles C. Mann. Chef Cordua is celebrated for brilliantly and irreverently mixing exclusively indigenous South American foodstuffs with European preparation techniques, producing contemporary North American dishes. The designs riff on pre-Columbian culture of the Americas and contemporary urban street culture. Like the Chef’s food, each component is handmade from scratch, produced in America with local ingredients.
