Indian Star Shape Wooden and Brass Low Coffee Table 1950s
About the Item
Indian wooden low coffee table in the shape of 8 pointed star decorated with embossed brass accents and nails.
This teak bajot low table from Rajasthan has a gorgeous rich patina and lots of character with beautiful signs of age and use.
Classic traditional low tea serving table constructed of solid wood and done in a stylized star shape and having turned wooden legs.
The points of the stars are each accented with engraved brass with a stylized motif.
These types of low Indian tables were known as Bajots and are found in many styles around India.
Used for Hindu prayers, the shape of this table shows a remarkable similarity to the Islamic Rub el Hizb known as the Islamic Moorish Star formed by two overlapping squares.
This is likely an influence from the Mughal period in India (1526–1761).
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
