Kerry Hastings, Handbuilt Ceramic Sculptural Side Table

About the Item

Inspired by a winter walk in the hills of Scotland this table was sculpted by hand and finished with a textured dolomite glaze to evoke a memory of landscape and time. Exploiting the material's pliability the wet clay was manipulated into folds and hollows echoing the dramatic and ancient scenery of the maker's homeland. The textures brings to mind weathered rock and granite. Taking further cues from nature it is organic in design, emphasising minimalism and promoting harmony between the man made and the natural world. Where art and design rub shoulders this piece heralds a departure in Kerry's work where she seeks to bring the outside into the home. She says of this new work: "During the making the bulges and hollows develop a psychological and emotional resonance, an organic familiarity and sense of natural balance, that has a presence that one can relate to. And what starts out as something personal to me eventually becomes something just very human".
