Born in Long Beach, California, in 1927, Gerald McCabe's journey towards becoming a celebrated furniture maker and designer is a testament to his enduring passion for craftsmanship and artistic innovation. After graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, he embarked on a remarkable life path.
During World War II, Gerald served in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he earned a bachelor's degree from the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a Master's degree from California State University Long Beach, both in Fine Art.
In the mid-1950s, Gerald McCabe opened his custom furniture business in Santa Monica, marking the inception of a distinguished career. His talent extended beyond the workshop as he began designing for well-known companies like Brown Saltman and Glenn of California.
The 1960s and 1970s saw McCabe's ascent to prominence as a designer and manufacturer. Under his own banners of Erin Furniture and Orange Crate Modern, he introduced his unique design philosophy to the world. McCabe's design signature is characterised by sleek modern lines, exacting precision in joinery, and a masterful fusion of wood, glass, and steel. His creations became synonymous with a harmonious blend of form and function, embodying the spirit of contemporary design.
