Sculpture "Solid Formations No 1" by Stine Mikkelsen

About the Item

Sculpture "Solid Formations no 1" by Stine Mikkelsen Dimensions: 130 x 145 x 56 cm Materials: Composite material based on crushed granite and fish glue. The inner construction is polystyrene. Inspired by Italian geology, two new composite materials have been developed by the studio. Composites where respectively marble and volcanic ash are the primary materials. In this collection, the new materials are accompanied by a granite composite, previously used in the Tactile Monoliths collection. The shapes of the objects are inspired by the forces of nature and the contrast between the natural landscape and the geometric formations created by humans in for instance quarries where natural resources are excavated. Stine Mikkelsen is a Copenhagen-based material researcher and manipulatorworking within the field of experimental product design. With a background in textile design, materials have a primary role for her in boththe process as well as the final objects. Through challenging and refining methodsfrom this field, unexpected things occur which lead to new ways of making and producing. Through this, she not only challenges the way we understand textile andproduct design, she also modernises the notion of crafts.
