Havana Table 9 Malachite Eight stunning green pillars of pure malachite stand with two of lapis lazuli separating the nave from the sanctuary in the gold-domed St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg Russia. Mined from the Ural Mountains in the 19th century, Russian malachite was highly prized throughout Europe. An entire room of malachite adorns the Winter Palace. Carl Fabergé used it for his famous carvings. And, in Italy, it was used to ward off the evil eye. Malachite, from the Greek word for “mallow” because of its leaf-like color, is found in the altered zones of copper deposits all over the world. Possibly the earliest ore of copper, it has been called one of the most important minerals in the history of humankind. In 4000 BC, it was discovered that heating malachite over a hot fire reduced it to native copper, and metallurgy was born. The Egyptians mined malachite in the Sinai and Eastern deserts using it for pigment and cosmetics. The Chinese also highly prized it as well as the people of the Timna valley in Israel who have been mining it at King Solomon’s mines for over 3,000 years. Today the most beautiful malachite comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo where its brilliant green continues to delight gem lovers around the world. Energetically, the Italians had it right. Malachite is one of the strongest stones for protection against negative energy. It also enhances willpower and strengthens our ability to take action on our thoughts and ideas. Malachite carries the frequency of the enlightened leader and reminds us of our power to manifest with the Universe. Steel Twelve hundred years after the discovery of iron, enterprising craftsmen in India discovered that iron and charcoal heated in a sealed container created a stronger, harder metal than pure iron. This was the first version of steel, and it quickly caught on throughout Asia and the Middle East. While Europeans were still using wrought iron for their weaponry, the Syrians were shaping famed Damascus steel swords. Further east, the Japanese crafted lightweight katana swords that are culturally significant to this day. Still, steel proved too time-consuming and expensive to make on a large scale. The Industrial Revolution of the 1700s created a need for a quick, affordable alternative to iron, which proved to be too soft and brittle for the engineering needs of the time. English metallurgists finally turned to steel and invented a process for mass producing a high quality version. In the space of a hundred years, steel became the foundation of the modern world. Steel tracks crisscrossed vast stretches of land, and new buildings were constructed using the stronger, more durable metal. Then, in 1914, a young Winston Churchill approached an American manufacturing magnate and requested help in the form of steel to build submarines that could fend off the German’s U-boats. Steel production skyrocketed in the US and helped bring an end to the first World War. After the war, steel was used to build skyscrapers, food cans, automobiles, home appliances, and endless implements of daily life. The Great Depression temporarily slowed production, but when the winds of war blew again, the factories resumed their earlier pace. After the second World War ended, steel manufacturers again turned their sights to improving the production process, and in the following decades, stainless steel was born. Iron, which accounts for about 98% of the material in steel, has been viewed as a distinctly “human” metal, unlike its more celestial counterparts, gold and silver. It endows its owner with strength, stamina, and resilience. When incorporated into steel, it takes on an even more protective role with the ability to block negative impulses and nightmares. Early in its history, steel was prized for its ability to protect against mischievous fairies.
