PEEKABOO TABLE 7 Bright white gypsum crystals intertwine and jut upwards from the center spine into flat, fanlike formations in Studio Greytak’s Peekaboo Table 7. This perfect example of the unusual fishtail gypsum casts a soft, calming glow over the rich zebrawood base. Found only in the swamps and along the riverbanks of western Africa, this hand logged, quartersawn wood gets its stripes from the growth zones between winter and spring wood. Associated with the moon, and bringing creativity, and luck, it works in tandem with strong columns of iron to frame the magical gypsum and showcase its powers of deep healing. A clear piece of glass finishes the piece and provides another spectacular view of the stone below. Gypsum is the Cinderella of the mineral world. It is one of the most widely used non-metallic minerals in the world and yet it is also capable of taking center stage. Gypsum alabaster carvings of the protective deity lamassu guarded the entrances to ancient Assyrian palaces. The fine-grained version of gypsum, alabaster, was used for sculptures throughout ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire and even the Nottingham alabasters of Medieval England.
