Three Side Tables by Mado Jolain & René Legrand, France, circa 1960

About the Item

Mado Jolain and René Legrand around 1960. Three side tables including a pair, glazed ceramic tile tops in shades of green and black, France. Bases in black lacquered iron. Two tables Width : 31.5 cm Depth : 31.5 cm Height : 37.5 cm One table Width : 26 cm Depth : 26 cm Height : 34.5 cm The smaller table can be stored under one of the two larger ones. Mado Jolain joined the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and the drawing and sculpture workshops of the Grande Chaumière. There she met René Legrand who was more interested in painting. Sensitized by the craze for ceramics that began before the war, Mado Jolain made her first attempts as a potter in the kiln of a utilitarian ceramics workshop on rue d'Alesia. In 1946, Mado Jolain and René Legrand got married and moved to Montrouge where René set up his painting studio. The ceramics workshop is not far away, in the 14th arrondissement. René Legrand shoots their first pieces. Folk art, very much in vogue in the post-war decorative arts, is a great source of inspiration for them. They visited the Dijon Museum and the Museum of Folk Art and Traditions where they appreciated the forms of utilitarian pottery. In 1948, creations from the Mado Jolain workshop were exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Ateliers d'Art Décoratif and at L'objet 1948, a landmark post-war exhibition held at the Denise Breteau Gallery, rue Bonaparte, Paris.
