19th Century English Regency Antique Sofa Table

About the Item

A finely crafted table of the Regency period, this sofa table features a vibrant solid mahogany top with molded edges of the solid, the outer leaves raising on original iron hinges over two knuckled wings to create a wide presentation space. The front has a pair of hand dovetailed drawers with very thin and light secondary woods, a thin cockbead molding surrounding the edges to frame the vibrant plum-pudding mahogany veneers of the facades. The back side of the table mirrors the front, though these are non-functioning faux drawers that simply allow the table to be viewed equally from all angles. An intricately turned pillar raises the table, the four sabre legs locked into this pedestal from the underside and secured with an original iron bracket. The legs terminate in large and handsomely detailed cast brass lion paw feet over brass castors. The underside of the table is untouched other than a handful of later screws - the workmanship is impeccable, the crossbar dovetailed into either side of the case, the back of the table frame likewise with dovetailed construction. For collectors with a passion for English furnishings, this is a fine piece in excellent original condition that will certainly be a cherished part of your home for a lifetime. Measurements: [closed] 36 1/2" W x 27 3/4" D x 28 1/8" W, [opened] 55 1/2" W Condition Report: Apparently replaced hardware, as there are additional holes on the primary drawers where prior hardware would in theory be secured; the two faux drawers though only have a single hole for the current hardware, so it is possible the pulls were just moved as they are correct pulls for the table. Crack in pedestal where legs join, not concerning but worth noting. Some minor ghosting to the French polish of the top along with some soft sun fading. Overall a simply gorgeous table.
