19th Century Qing Altar Table from Shanxi Province

About the Item

A long elmwood altar or console table with everted flanges or 'qiaotou' (commonly called "birds wings"), supported on recessed trestle legs with carved, stylized ruyi, a sacred fungus and with lingzhi carvings on corner spandrels of apron, symbolizing happiness, wealth and longevity. Shanxi province, China, 19th century. Original dark brown lacquer finish. Measures: 91 1/2" long x 17 1/2" deep x 38" high (35" high from floor to serving surface).

    Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Top panel that is mortised into the frame has contracted enough to leave a small gap between the frame and edge of panel. There is an excellent photograph of the top.
