About the Item

Rare sofa table by Estelle and Erwin Laverne, Laverne International, 1954. 3 cm thick Carrara marble-top and chrome-plated steel. Very good condition. Diameter: 137 cm, Total weight 135 kilo. Worldwide shipping. Both Lavernes teamed up after training as painters with Hans Hofmann and began working as designers in the 1930s. In 1938 they opened the important New York company "Laverne Originals" and developed their very special modern art style. A highlight in the late 50s was their transparent plastic furniture, which attracted attention with its curvaceous designs - the "Invisible Group". Laverne's plexiglass seating furniture was inspired by Eero Saarinen's designs, had names of catchy flowers like "Daffodil", and also had slender pedestals. The transparent acrylic chair "LiLy" is a highlight in the Hollywood blockbuster "Men in Black II" and designed by the Lavernes in the late 50s. In its transparency, the chair reflects like a crystal, just like its 3 "siblings" : "Jonquil, Buttercup and Daffodil". Even in the 1960s, both Lavernes worked together as designers and interior designers. Renowned companies such as Ford Motors and General Motors, as well as the Dallas Sheraton Hotel, were served by them in interior design projects. The Lavernes earned a lot of money, lived in an 80 room mansion with 26 bathrooms on Long Island, with a huge f waterfront property. Erwine Laverne, born 1909, was a tall, imposing man with a strong ego. Estelle, a Lester born in 1915, met in New York in 1932 in Hans Hofmann's Art Students League, who had published an essay on "Plastic Creation". This obviously left a deep impression on them for their later work. As a couple, they convinced as furniture designers with their striking design and materials, which they saw as "contrasting elements" in the rooms. In a lawsuit against the state they lost their belongings and ended their career. Estelle fell ill with a type of MS and died in 1997, Erwine six years later at a very old age. Both had become completely penniless and had lived in a nursing home.
