About the Item

Being a simply superb example of the best quality during the period, this exceedingly fine English Regency sofa table is crafted with a pure eye for design using the best materials available during the period. Utilizing the highly coveted and difficult to acquire rosewood, each surface is richly dressed in the most brilliant bands of chaotic grain movements. Every primary surface is carefully veneered with the rosewood over mahogany and pine secondary woods. The top retains a warm cognac tone throughout the surface from years of use and gentle sunlight exposure, the undertones of rose and mahogany coming through in the apron and base. A repetition of four-leaf florals and eight-pointed stars within a double border is employed along the top, column, base and legs. The front of the table has two drawers, each with brass inlaid edging and a perfect fit into the case, the stamped brass pulls of very fine quality. The drawers show precise dovetailing on the front edge, all secondary materials of the drawers a beautiful red mahogany; the bottom board is just lightly chamfered along it's edges and set in grooves along the sides. This table was meant to be displayed and viewed from all directions, the side opposite these drawers with faux drawer fronts that perfectly replicate the front. When the leaves are raised, each over three cast iron hinges, little pairs of wings from either side can be drawn out to create a very firm 56" surface. The wings are each inlaid in a manner that beautifully compliments the table. The table is nearly untouched in it's originality, the surface naturally having been restored over the years, but retaining entirely original pulls, hinges, screws, castors and inlays. The underside of the table is a tidy display of clean joinery. For the collector who takes pride in the finest of the period, this table is a simply exceptional selection - it is a rare find of unusually fine quality. It will certainly be a cherished highlight to any carefully selected collection of furnishings. Measurements: 35 3/8" W x 27 13/16" H x 26 13/16" D, 56" W when leaves are lifted Condition Report: Top had water damage at some point resulting in some surface discoloration and flaws to shellac in two areas, a gentle warp to one corner of a leaf, shrink cracks in the rosewood top and a light lift to some brass inlays. Some blocks added beneath the top to heal gaps. Old black wash to all underside components, likely to protect from possible pest damage. Untouched structure and all hardware original, including screws, hinges, castors and pulls. No key. Overall a simply exceptional table of very fine quality.
