A Fine Pair Of Regency Mahogany & Satinwood-Inlaid Sofa Tables

About the Item

A fine and rare pair of English Regency-period mahogany sofa tables of elegant design ca 1811 – 1820. Note the beautifully-figured, matched mahogany & satinwood tops supported on ‘curule’ legs, united by a stretcher. The tops with broad satinwood margins contained within ebony and boxwood lines with rosewood crossbandings. Cedar-lined working drawers with dummy fronts to the reverse. All of lovely quality. Dimensions approx: Height: 28” Width: leaves down 34”, extended 59” Depth: 30”. Deep rich colour, good patina, great condition throughout, and ready to be installed in a drawing room, or equally at home in a library. It was considered very fashionable to display a pair of sofa tables during the English Regency. Of this form and quality these are very rare, highly desirable and seldom appear on the market especially in pairs. Both have a useful working long drawer and are often used as writing tables. LITERATURE: For similar X-end standard supports see Ralph Edwards ‘The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’, 1964, p. 572, ill. 10.

  • Fine Regency Mahogany Library Centre Table
    Located in Lymington, GB
A fine Regency period tilt-top brass inlaid mahogany and calamander library center table. Raised on a concave-sided triform base, with well-modelled cast-brass scrolling feet. Also referred to as a monopodium (table). All in excellent condition, well figured, and of very good rich color. Typical of designs by Thomas Hope (1769 - 1831). This form of antique table is also associated with work by George Bullock (1777 - 1818) and George Oakley (circa 1765 - 1841). Refs: A similar table with a leather insert, in the manner of Thomas Hope, circa 1800 - 1805, was sold in London for £39,650 - December 2010. This early 19th century table is reminiscent of the ‘Grecian’ style that the pioneering collector and designer Thomas Hope (1769-1831) popularized in Britain with the publication of ‘Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’ in 1807. Thos. Hope (banker, born 1769, d. 1831) The furniture manufacturer George Oakley (circa 1765-1841) was greatly influenced by Hope’s designs, and produced fashionable furniture in this style, using brass and star inlays similar to our table on offer. The firm’s designs and craftsmanship earned them royal patronage, and Oakley worked for the Prince Regent at Carlton House, as well as supplying furniture and upholstery for The Mansion House and The Bank of England. His work for the Cheere family - of Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, UK - is well documented. The reference to Geo. Oakley relates to a known table of this pattern in calamander wood and brass marquetry of starred-ribbon guilloche, which corresponds to the brass marquetry in a table supplied by Oakley in 1810 to Papworth Hall. • 19th Century Inlaid Demilune Satinwood Commode
    Located in Lymington, GB
An English semi-elliptical, or demilune (half moon), inlaid satinwood commode of neoclassical form. Of very good rich color and patination. The marquetry in kingwood, tulipwood, burr veneers and harewood. The fine quality top inlaid with a large conch shell, with radiating trailing marquetry of bell-flower ribands, within a Vitruvian scroll border. This inlaid commode (or chest) contains three hinged cupboard doors each centred by oval panels inlaid with two-handled classical urns with drapery and flambeaux, on plinths set with burr veneers. The central cupboard revealing a bank of three oak-lined fitted drawers. The flanking cupboards with shelves. Raised on short square tapering legs and spade feet. 19th century, with 18th-century elements. All in excellent condition and of superb quality. Satinwood and marquetry commodes of this design reflect some of the highest achievements in English cabinet-making. Sometimes these antique commodes reveal the hand of two different master cabinet-makers, with tops differing from the bases. References: For a comparison see A. Hepplewhite and Co., Cabinet Maker, 'The Cabinet - Maker and Upholsterer's Guide' (1788) plate 78: ''Design for a Commode, enriched with painted or inlaid work adapted for a drawing room, within are shelves which answer the use of a closet or cupboard - may have one principal door in the front, or one at each end; are made of various shapes; and being used in principal rooms, require considerable elegance. The panels may be of satin wood, plain or inlaid; the top, and also the border round the front, should be inlaid.'' A fine George III satinwood and marquetry demilune commode attributed to Thomas Chippendale sold for £134,500 in Bonhams 'Fine English Furniture & Works of Art Sale', 19 Nov 2014. A related pair of satinwood commodes are in the Royal collection, made in 1781 for George IV when he was Prince of Wales. XQC 1988, 95, & XQC 2004, GIII, 284. • Fine and Rare Regency Chinoiserie Occasional Table
    Located in Lymington, GB
A fine and rare English chinoiserie-decorated occasional table, circa 1820. The subject matter is extremely rare in that it depicts Europeans in exotic oriental robes. One is seated with an opium pipe; displayed in a polychrome romantic tropical environment with pavilions, rockwork, trellising, foliage, palms, with a peacock and HoHo bird at their feet. Note the very rare and charming depiction of these men with beards. In over 65 years we have never encountered a japanned table showing this European feature. Raised on a gilded, reeded, partly-ebonised column rising from a stylised platform base and spreading, gilded animal...
