Regency Mahogany Sofa Table

About the Item

An Extremely Good Quality Regency Period, 19th Century, Mahogany Sofa Table Of Generous Proportions, Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Two Flap Top With Attractive Banded Decoration, Over Two Drawers To Front Opposed By Two False Drawers To Reverse With Replacement Brass Knobs, Raised On Elegant Brass Lyre End Supports Terminating With Elegant Sabre Legs And Original Brass Paw Castors. Sofa Tables were relatively common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself. Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture. This is a particularly nice Regency sofa table, constructed with good rich, well figured mahogany timbers and it has the usual two drawers to front, two false drawers to reverse and two folding flap design, which allows for great versatility in terms of how much surface area one wishes to utilise. It is also has slightly more presence than most due to being a little wider. As with all of our items this Mahogany Sofa Table has been attended to in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale, by our highly trained and skilled antique furniture restorers including a light clean and natural wax polish to ensure that it is in retail condition and ready to be placed immediately into the home or workplace. Circa 1825. Height 29.5in. Width 46.25in (flaps down). Width 68in (flaps up). Depth 24in. A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Sofa Table, Of Rare Diminutive Proportions, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top Having Drop Flap To Each End, Over One Long Drawer & One False Drawer To Reverse With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Square End Supports With Elegant High Stretcher And Four Sabre Legs Terminating On Original Brass Castors. This chamring little sofa table is of really unusual size, the kind of proportions which we have rarely come across before, but those proportions are absolutely great for both function and elegance. It is just about small enough to not dominate the centre of a room, or even to just tuck into a corner, whilst at the same time retaining a little presence. Its constructed from good quality mahogany timbers and instead of the two drawers at the front which is more commonly found on its full size counterparts it has just one elongated drawer and of course another false drawer to the reverse. Sofa tables were relatively commonly found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself. Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture. As with all of our items this georgian mahogany sofa table...

  • Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet. As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from. Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table. Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed. The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
