19th Century French Carved Oak Dolphin Table or Desk Renaissance Gothic Style

About the Item

A stunning 19th century French carved oak Dolphin library table desk Renaissance Gothic style. Direct from France, an elegant antique French carved library table or writing desk, commonly referred to as a “dolphin" table, so called for the ornately carved "dolphin" feet. Additionally, dolphin and gargoyle carvings on the apron further accentuate this beautiful 19th century French carved oak dolphin library table or writing desk. A great size for this style, perfect for a writing desk or sofa table. Wonderfully versatile for use in today's home. Incredible detailed carving, captivating features that include ornate, relief carved lion masks on the canted corners with large, carved gothic drop finials and Black Forest carvings below. Fancy carved French gadrooning on the wide frieze, with a full length dovetailed drawer to the front. Elongated repeating design covers the apron, interrupted by lion's heads on the corners and at the center of the full-width drawer facade. Accolade forms with triangular rosettes adorn the bottom of the entire apron. Acorn pendant finials on each corner under the lions' heads. Dual legs on each side, and hand carved acanthus bulbous “cup and cover” shape to the legs. Renaissance flair, with detailed, carved mythical “dolphin” sea creature feet. Large carved stretcher provides stability and support. Carved on all sides this 19th century French carved oak Dolphin library table or writing desk is perfect for placement anywhere in a room because there's not a back side. Well built by craftsmen of the period, circa 1880. Measures: 45 3/8" Wide x 29 1/4" deep x 31 1/4" high. Apron clearance 23".
