Empire Style Gilt Bronze Tessellated Amethyst Center Table
Located in Houston, TX
This remarkable and magnificent salon center table is designed in the Empire style, which flourished when Napoleon I was Emperor of France (1804-1814). The style was a phase of neoclassicism, which drew heavily on the art of Imperial Rome and ancient Egypt. It was characterized by its grand classically-inspired motifs, such as sphinxes, busts, laurel and palm leaves, and cornucopias. Beneath the tabletop, there is a black-painted bronze frieze, which is decorated with gilt bronze palm leaf motifs and rosettes. The table is supported on three monopodia supports.
