About the Item

This is a fantastic and extremely rare Chippendale period mahogany Campaign Table in totally original condition. With folding top and two drawers, with their original brass and steel swann neck handles and escutcheons situated at either end. The legs are hinged at the mid way point, folding neatly inwards towards the centre, the removable stretcher bar solidly locates into cut recesses in the rails and the rear swinging leg is removed by turning the original steel thumb bolt from the hinge. The spandrels are suitably beefed up for its intended military propose, but retaining a decided Chippendale period flair. Fully disassembled the table packs up solidly, to enable stowage into the military baggage train. This particular table has a most interesting history, originally supplied to Captain Robert Oliver of The Life Guards (Blues and Royals) in circa 1760. This table went on the various colonial expeditions and campaigns with Captain Oliver and eventually was passed to his son (also Robert Oliver) who also followed his father into the army and put the Campaign table to good use again in the many and various late 18th century and early 19th century Napoleonic war engagements. The table was subsequently re-acquired by a member of the Oliver family at the House sale of Castle Oliver Ireland, conducted by Mealeys in 1970, it remained in the family for the next 49 years before being offered to us for sale. Campaign pieces are highly desirable and collectible, 18th century Campaign pieces are very rare indeed, let alone examples with family provenance! A wonderful and beautiful piece.
