About the Item

Octagonal library table in the Gothic taste. American (probably New York), about 1845-1850. Walnut, with baize top. 29 1/2 in. high, 48 1/2 in. diameter (point-to-point). Although some Gothic Revival houses were fully outfitted with matching furniture in the Gothic taste, Knoll, later Lyndhurst, being a prime example through both building campaigns, other houses were kept up to date by the addition of a single room, which was more often than not a library in deference to the popular romantic taste for Gothic literature. Library tables thus became an increasingly popular form during the Gothic Revival period. The present table is one of a group of octagonal examples that were probably made in New York about 1845–50. The most elaborate of these tables is the one in the library from the Frederick Deming House in Newburgh, New York, as it is now installed in The American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, A Walk through the American Wing, p. 97 illus.). That table uniquely features an unusually elaborate base and an inset circular specimen marble top, which may be original or may have been added by a later owner who was in the marble trade. All of the other tables in this group are of essentially the same form, although they vary slightly both in size and in the exact program of Gothic decoration, demonstrative of a desire on the part of the best cabinetmakers of the day to produce pieces that continued to have a “custom” aspect even in an era that began to favor mass production. Thus, the diameter varies from example to example, and the exact scale and placement of the Gothic ornament changes, but all but the Metropolitan table seem to have been supplied with the same pieced octagonal wooden top (see Feld and Feld, In Pointed Style, p. 99 fig. 13, illus. in color), which was likely originally covered with baize or felt. Just as earlier cabinetmakers sought inspiration from the design books and popular literature being published in London and Paris, it is likely that the as-yet unknown designer of these tables referred to A. W. N. Pugin’s Gothic Furniture (1835), which quickly became a standard source for work in this manner. Condition: Excellent. Cleaned and polished. The baize covering on the original wooden top has been replaced.
