Octagonal "Pietra Dura" Tabletop, Marble and Hardstones, 20th Century

About the Item

Inspired by Italian models from the 16th and 17th centuries. The technique, similar to the inlay in wood, uses colored marbles and hard stones on a background. All of these materials were exceptionally expensive, especially since they often had to be imported. In addition, for the realization of furniture, vases ... with this technique was indispensable a highly specialized staff. The "work of hard stones" arose in Florence: Piero de Medici and Lorenzo the Magnificent wanted to revitalize a technique of the Roman mosaic (opus sectile) with the pertinent variations of thematic and technique. Such success was this novelty that emerged creative centers throughout Europe, including the Gobelins Factory in France, the Royal Workshop in Naples and the one that established Carlos III in the Royal Site of El Buen Retiro in Madrid. Although they began with an extraordinary decorative variety, from 1600 the fashion decided to the naturalistic motives, to which were added butterflies, pearls ... with the passage of time. The present example shows a great influence of this tradition, as much in technique as in aesthetics, as the flowers of lis, in clear allusion to Gobelinos, demonstrate. Compare some of the few works that have come to us: the Neapolitan table of the Museo del Prado in Madrid by Francesco Ghinghi (catalog number O00511), the tables and tables of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, or the board of the late XVI Or principles of the Roman XVII (inventory 62,259) of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Size: 150 x 150 cms. Height is orientative.
