Philadelphia Queen Anne Mahogany Tilting Candle Stand W/ Suppressed Ball

About the Item

A most attractive American Queen Anne mahogany candle stand from the Philadelphia area, circa the last quarter of the 18th century, the table is particularly striking for the diminutive and fully developed suppressed ball at the bottom of the long and thin tapering baluster. This shines with a deep glowing ruby patina, the center outlined with a scratch-bead line around it’s equator. The top is turned from a single plank of mahogany, the gorgeous stepped rim integral with the top and quite finely formed. This tilts on dowels projecting from the pedestal head into original flanking battens, the screw heads hidden beneath old oxidized filler and inscrutable. The underside retains it’s original brass clasp with three original hand filed screws in unmoved position, affixing firmly to the brass catch on the square head of the baluster. The stand rests over cabriole legs that lock into the pillar with large dovetails, the round knees carved to transition to a sharp raised edge that terminates in spaded feet over thin integral blades. The turning work completed in this stand is of the highest quality, particularly immediately above and below the ball turning. For serious collectors of fine American antiques, this is a treasure to be cherished, circa 1780. Measurements: 19 7/8” W x 19 5/8” D (top diameter) x 26 1/2” H (horizontal); 37 5/8” H (vertical); 19 1/4” from toe to toe. Condition Report: Old refinish with nice surface patina. Center of top with circle of gloss variation, probably from having something in the center of the table for a long period of time. Light surface wear to feet, scratch along baluster (we can retouch these upon request).
