19th Century Jennens & Bettridge Tray With a View of Bellagio, Lake Como

About the Item

A superb large hand painted papier-mâché tray with the view of Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy, signed by the Royal Makers Jennens & Bettridge, London. Impressed on the back 'Jennens & Bettridge, Birm m & London' under a Royal Crown. Painted text 'Bellaggio' lower middle. Made around 1840, England. It is in a wonderful original condition, most likely because it has been hanging on a wall. The size is one of the largest that they produced. The firm was run by Theodore Hyla Jennens and John Bettridge between 1816 and 1864. They acquired the workshops of Henry Clay, Japanner to George III and the Prince of Wales, in 1816. Their original premises were in Birmingham and they started a London branch at 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia in 1837. Later offices were established in Paris and New York. The firm was famous for the range of papier-mâché goods manufactured in their factories and produced a range of products including writing boxes, trays, fans, and larger pieces of furniture such as chairs, tables and sofas. Materials & Making Papier-mâché was made by pasting layers of paper over moulds of the required shape. The object was then oiled and baked at very high temperatures. The shape of this tray would have been finished by a cabinet-maker before it was varnished and dried in a stove. Bellagio is situated in the Province of Como in the Italian region of Lombardy. It is located on Lake Como. It has always been famous for its location with the alps in the background. It is the church of Saint Giacomo which is seen across the Lake Como on the painted view and it stands in the historical center of Bellagio, one of the most enchanting and picturesque in the whole lake Como area. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, the basilica of Saint Giacomo is a fine example of the Como-Lombard Romanesque style.
