Moroccan Folding Brass Tray Table Early 20th Century

About the Item

An early 20th century Moroccan brass coffee or side tray table with folding ebonised turned timber base. The brass tray depicts cattle, sheep, goats and elephants in two bands, with several bands of stylised fig vines and date palms. In the centre is a 'Solomon's Seal', the ancient Arabic symbol made of two interlocking triangles. The tray has been polished but retains some darker marks due to it’s age and everyday use. The tray is sits flattest in one position where it has formed itself to the slightly uneven heights of the leg tops. It’s easy to find the right position by turning the tray until it sits flat. The leg frame is in very good condition, however, it’s worth noting that there's always movement in these folding stands. They are designed to fold easily and this means a little lateral movement to and fro. Once weight is applied by placing things on the tray, this movement is lessened. This is normal. In legend, the seal granted King Solomon protection from malevolent forces. However, in is long use in Arabic architecture and design, one of the things it came to symbolise was science and geometry, including the control of irrigation and the development of Arabic pleasure gardens - earthly representations of the Garden of Eden. These ideas of prosperity, pleasure and order are lovely symbolism for a folding table that might travel onto the terrace or into the garden for afternoon tea, or equally serve coffee or cocktails indoors.

Condition:
Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Timber frame carefully cleaned, signs of age left, some wear and loss of black finish. Slight movement in the base when set up, normal for this style of table. Tray polished chemically but not abraded, there are clear signs of age, marks and spots.
