About the Item

The Collection in Neutral: These works were influenced by the Dry Landscapes Collection. A collection that uses dramatic textures to create a feeling of tranquility. Each work is inspired by some of the prestigious shines and gardens in Japan, which are known to many of us as Zen gardens. These shrines and gardens use white stones, pebbles, and/or gravel to build and create a quiet peaceful atmosphere. The material is called ??? (Haku gyoku seki) which literally means “white stones.” The grounds of these gardens and shrines are carefully arranged into patterns or paths of white stones and sand to bring out the meaning of life. Each piece in this collection is wrapped in a hand-crafted maple wooden frame. Including these frames helps you better hang the artwork and provides a level of protection for the works. Each wooden frame is detachable. About the Artist: Monica Curiel is a mixed media artist and a Dallas, Texas native, born to immigrants from western Mexico. As a child, she spent her summers in Mexico and today Curiel’s experience as a first-generation Mexican American is at the core of her work. She intentionally manipulates non-traditional materials such as grouting tools, plaster, wood stain, and house paints – construction materials commonly used by the Latino labor force – to create pieces that draw Curiel back to her cultural roots. As an American born individual, Curiel’s struggle to balance her identity as both an American and Mexican woman is evident when examining her work. Her mixed media art represents experiences and identities in ways that are not only salient for the contemporary moment we are experiencing via racial protests, politics, and the coronavirus pandemic, but also for people from all walks of life who are working to make sense of this period in our collective and individual lives. As a young adult, Curiel was diagnosed with cancer during both her freshman and sophomore years of college. Upon recovering her health, she transferred from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles to Columbia College in Chicago and then University of Kansas in Lawrence. She was a Gilman scholar at Florence University of the Arts in Italy, where she studied Italian culture and interior architecture. Her international education has led her to develop a fervor for collaborating creatively through diversity. She is driven to create art available to all audiences, and she seeks to create works that establish ease and profound movement through texture. Curiel has partnered with South Loop Loft to present a beautiful collection of works in a variety of sizes and mediums.
