Femke van Gemert has a background in fashion design and trendsetting.
When witnessing this tremendous increase in fast fashion consumption, she decided to start exploring ways to turn unrequired textile into pieces of art. Femke’s practice reveals an alternative renaissance of textile leftovers, enriched with her sense of emotion and distinct personal touch.
Land and Water II is a wall hanging textile piece made from clothing production leftovers. It reflects on the beauty of the nature around us. What the world was before us, and what it will be after us. There was land & water, rocks, mountains, springs and rivers, volcanos and deltas.
The piece is made in the tranquilizing, well-known colour palette so often seen in landscapes and therefore in visual arts for centuries. Because people like it so much. The everlasting essence of Nature makes us bare passers-by, in time. These magnificent landscapes can make us feel very small and insignificant. Will the planet finally erase the traces of human life, and turn back to this pristine, beautiful state? A deep respect for this is what this work is about.
Land and Water II is a vivid example of sustainably conscious soft art addressing today's issues of overproduction and overconsumption.
