About the Item

An interesting pop art era framed mixed media portrait of Mick Jagger by controversial artist Pietro Psaier and signed by Andy Warhol. The painted canvas is contained within a moulded frame. Pietro Psaier: It is unusual for an artist with a prolific, accomplished and diverse output to be regarded by some as a ‘hoax’ or a ‘scam’. This may be true if the artist were blatantly profiteering in the guise of a famous artist, however Pietro Psaier was not guilty of this. As a direct descendant of an artist who withdrew from the public market and spent much of his life as a recluse, I can fully appreciate the mystery and intrigue which surrounds the work of Pietro Psaier. We all love a mystery but his legacy does exist, it is unique and highly accomplished. Added to the shroud of mystery is an association between Psaier and Andy Warhol which on all accounts seems to have been a deep and meaningful friendship. Pietro Psaier was allegedly born in 1936 and emerged during a time when pop art was being elevated mainly by Andy Warhol and the numerous other artists supported by him. This was a time when artists gravitated towards each other and many associations were formed, several of which have little history or indeed, as yet, remain undiscovered. It is therefore easy to doubt the Psaier/Warhol association and elevate one’s own self-importance through passing judgement on this! It is also easy to simply dismiss this as a ‘hoax’ or ‘scam’ something on which the art world does seem to thrive. There is, however, no mystery over the volume and diversity of artworks by Psaier. They are professional, accomplished and certainly the work of a serious ‘pop’ artist. Why would any able artist produce such a vast and diverse volume of work to simply try and mislead the art world? Surely this would not be to their personal benefit! There are clear traits of influence, particularly from Andy Warhol and indeed some are signed by him. The Warhol studio in New York (The Factory 1962-84) was a hang-out for drug influenced artists many of whom produced works inspired by Warhol, many of which Warhol signed. This has simply added to the confusion of the pop-art era. Pietro Psaier is believed to have died, age 70, in the tragic Sri Lankan tsunami in 2004. Since then, much of his collection has been distributed by his son Paul who is based in California. There have also been several attempts to prove the association between Psaier and Warhol, and indeed prove the existence of Psaier. There are photographs of Psaier and Warhol together, the association more recently confirmed by Psaier’s psychiatrist Carlos Langelaan Alvarez, based in Madrid, who treated Psaier between 1979 and 1992.He described Psaier as ‘an accomplished artist’ suffering from ‘drug psychosis’. In 1983 he recalls Psaier introducing him to Warhol while Warhol was exhibiting at the Fernando Vijande Gallery in Madrid. He further confirmed ‘There is no doubt that Pietro Psaier knew Andy Warhol and it is my belief that Warhol was involved in some of his artworks’. While the evidence continues to support the existence and association with Warhol the mystical stigma continues to shroud the work of Pietro Psaier. The very nature of allegations of ‘hoax’ and ‘scam’ has simply ensured that Psaier’s artwork remains grossly undervalued. It does not, however, undermine the quality and the content of the work. As more facts emerge it is likely that the work of Psaier will receive the recognition which it truly deserves with prices likely to reflect this recognition. In the mean-time collectors can enjoy ownership at a fraction of the cost for works by similar artists from the pop art era.
