About the Item

This is an antique George & the Dragon display plaque. An English, gilt metal and beech framed decorative relief, dating to the Regency period and later, circa 1820. As one of the world's most venerated saints, St George of Lydda - today, South East of Tel Aviv in Israel - is best known for his dragon slaying feat upon horseback. George is the patron saint of many locations and organisations including England, Ukraine, Moscow and Catalonia. The legend of the dragon dates to the 11th century. Pleasingly presented relief in an attractive framed mount Displaying a desirable aged patina and in good order Beech frame presents fine grain interest and rich russet hues Striking gilt metal relief basks in bright golden tones Superb sculptural casting, with George slaying the dragon Later 19th century mount to rear, with hanging wire for wall mounting This is a fascinating antique George & the Dragon display plaque, with a superb decorative appearance.
